Description

The Appian Way Regional Park is a sprawling 4580-hectare protected area, making it the second-largest urban park in Europe. Located primarily in Rome, with parts extending into neighboring towns, the park serves as a "green wedge" between the city center and the Alban Hills to the southeast. It is home to a wealth of ancient Roman relics, including the famous Appian Way, the Villa of the Quintilii, the Park of the Caffarella, the Tombs of Via Latina archaeological zone, and the Aqueduct Park. Despite facing challenges such as illegal construction and encroachment, the park became a reality in 1988 and has since been expanded. While the majority of the park remains in private hands, there are ongoing efforts to extend its boundaries and bring more of the land into public possession. With ambitious plans to further expand the park, the Appian Way Regional Park offers a unique opportunity to explore ancient history and natural beauty just outside the bustling city of Rome.
